I think you miss the point. Yes, you can fly a drone and generate point cloud, mesh, orthophotos etc.
The software isn't cheap, but there are subscription based services to generate.
But .. you can't do it from your office. You need to physically visit the site. And there are also plenty of places you can't fly a drone - you mention campus - whilst I've flown schools etc - it is during school holidays when no one is there. We tried to University of Queensland on Boxing Day but it didn't work out.
This is about on-demand, off-the-shelf, bulk data capture.
There have been plenty of comments about churn etc .. we have been using Nearmap since the free-portal days and have paid for a subscription since the paywall came in. There would be thousands of users exactly the same. Surveyors, town planners, architects, councils, solar .. police (one bust I know of - an underground drug lab - saw it getting built on nearmap ironically).
You need a lot of coverage .. regularly. The cheaper the pixels and the more pixels captured - the better the result .. the more subscribers .. loops.
