Westfield plans to introduce paid parking at Westfield Chermide in a very suburban part of Brisbane. I understand the current plan is to charge for stays over 3 hrs.
Considering that at least 20% of shops would be cafes, eateries or hairdressers the move to charge after 3 hrs seems to be ill-concieved, as the mix of shops is clearly one that allows shoppers to relax, have a coffee, get the hair done, and then maybe do a bit of shopping (grocery or otherwise). Now the challenge for many shoppers will be to 'beat the clock'. In an environment where people will be looking to save money, you have to seriously ask if this is a good move by Westfield.
Personally, I think this move is too high handed, and will likely vote with my feet and shop elsewhere (although it is by far the best shopping centre around).
