Given Musk / Tesla have survived based on continuous significant Capital Raising to fund losses and development I would expect he cares a lot about the sharemarket than that statement would suggest - without the market and accessing fresh capital Tesla would have been out of business years ago.
It is difficult to pigeon hole Musk - he makes some outlandish statements and pursues a variety of activities - but he has managed to continue to milk the US market for many years and if nothing else Tesla is closer to being a sustainable company from its operations than it ever has been. Investors especially the early ones have seen significant capital appreciation however if I was an investor I would not be holding my breath for a decent dividend return anytime soon.
