my answer was a bit too brief.
if you buy a large index say of US shares eg. IVV you know with a high probability that the thing will grow on average of 10% a year. a large index of shares should give a more predictable return. if you buy an individual share it is much harder to estimate a value but it can be done.
some people blindly just buy banks but they have no idea what the sp should be
