In looking at the disruption in the Lithium sector caused by Musk comments
on mining clay, the single most important question I now have is how will
the lithium miners respond to the threat Musk has posed.
In that respect, what will the miners do with their current excess capacity.
As demand increases will they simply roll over for their customers and
provide product at these low price levels, or will they refuse to put to work
idle assets unless their profit margins are substantially increased.
On the surface, you would think it is pretty obvious what they should do.
What we all hope they will do!! But sometimes, some of these guys get
their priorities confused. Increased marker share becomes more important
than increased profitability. Expanding their customer base through low ball
pricing. Trying to prevent new projects from becoming feasable by low balling
pricing.
These are all actions that have been taken in the past and the customers
have taken advantage of it. Profitability has to be prioritized over keeping
customers happy. Musk is betting the miners fold going forward because
of his threat to get into mining. We will shortly begin moving into a seller's market.
The miners can both expedite and take advantage of that change. I hope that
the Musk threats tick them off and strengthen their resolve not to get taken
over the hot coals yet again.
