dave, i'm assuming, since you're retired, that you haven't run a business under workchoices. but let me tell you, workchoices enabled us to give certain applicants "a go" that just wouldn't have made it through the door previously. & some of them have worked out fabulously.
from now on, not only are these guys probably not going to get a look in (again), but the few lucky ones that do will will not get a permanent position. it's just not worth the risk & the trouble i.e. casuals only as per sb2000's post.
eagle, laying people off is one of the hardest things to do, & the vast majority of employers do it compassionately. point is they shouldn't be punished for it by bad legislation that doesn't allow them flexibility.
also, you say "have been a small business propietor", this could mean you're self employed or had 1 or 2 employees. not hard to be on terms with 1 or 2 employees. same goes for you dave.
