A significant contributing factor is without doubt people attempting to defend the indefendable.
No dramas with the stay and fight or get out early if you have a genuine, realistic workable plan with multiple contingencies; if not, leave at the first sign of a fire. . .
I think that while many people had plans which were in their minds realistic, the reality is that unless their homes were 100% steel clad and framed with fire shutters over all windows and doors and no timber whatsoever, then most didn't stand a chance. Local councils and other relevant authorities need to ensure these lessons are learnt, with the CFA, RFS and professional fire brigades and other appropriate experts getting out there in the community, talking with people and providing sensible, realistic advise, assessment and constructive criticism of residents' fire plans to ensure we do not see a repeat of this anywhere in Australia in the future. Homes can be replaced, people can not.
