Thanksgiving to 'restore Christian values'

Australia's first national 'Day of Thanksgiving' is being held today.

Organisers say the event, which was announced by Governor-General Michael Jeffery in February, aims to restore Christian values in society.

The day will be an annual feature of the national calendar and is being held to coincide with the Christian celebration of Pentecost.

Prime Minister John Howard says the day encourages Australians to recognise the values and people that sustain the nation.
