All modern OS, specifically Linux and Windows are not "expecting" volatile memory, its just expecting memory. If it didn't than virtual memory wouldn't be functional. Also memory is not refreshed on boot. Volatile memory is lost when theres no power, other than that the only time its "refreshed" is when the OS kernel allocates memory to applications, that is when its cleared so that applications don't have random values sitting in its memory table - thus when using apps / games by bad programmers (especially those of us who still use C/C++) you get the invalid pointer exception errors of cxffffff.
Here, take a look at the very first SSD from 2005 running in a PCI-e slot using DDR Ram. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I-RAM
The importance of any memory is the controller or "vehicle" as people seem to be calling it. The only time an OS Patch or software would need to be re-written would be for older OS (ie. IBM AIX, older unix servers, MS-Dos, Windows 95, etc). In which case, anyone running servers that old would not give 2 shits about using the latest and greatest memory tech.
On another note the speed of technological evolution:
2016 vs 2020
SSD 2016: 447 Mbps
SSD 2020: 7,000 Mbps
In 2015 it was believed that 3D Nand, V-Nand, etc was too expensive to scale. This has been proven wrong.
Fastest Speeds of each main type of DRAM
SD 1998: 1,600 MBps
DDR1 2000: 4,000 Mbps
DDR2 2003: 8,000 Mbps
DDR3 2007: 12,800 Mbps
DDR4 2014: 35,200 Mbps
DDR5 2020: 51,200 Mbps
The context in time of which comments and statements are made matter and if that context is no longer relevant, neither are the comments. But hey, if some of you want to believe that 4DS and imec are releasing a SCM around 34,000 Mbps... then you should be selling everything you own and living in a tent for the next 12-24 months to buy more shares.
