Gold tailings don't oxidize in water. One suspends things in water so they don't oxidize as in free air. In addition, there is residual pyrite (FeS) where the S combines with water to move towards SO4 with the significant extra oxygen demand which makes the water annoxic and acidic.
That doesn't mean we won't get better than 42% gold recovery though. The regrind allows better penetration of the cyanide into the gold particles which improves gold dissolution and recovery. I'm simplifying things significantly but that's it in a nutshell.
