Hot Chili is a junior explorer who's had to raise capital to fund all the exploration they've done over the last 10 years. It's not uncommon for companies like this to have a lot of shares on issue as they generally have no other source of income. The difference is Hot Chili has literally struck gold now and should be able to leverage other sources of funding against what they have in the ground.
If the number of shares on issue is enough to put your friends off investing in it then they really haven't done much research. Hot Chili could do a 5:1 share consolidation tomorrow and have 500 million shares on issue, what's the difference?
