Pretty much. In gold exploration the theory with auger is to find the calcrete layer and sample that. Calcrete is a good collector of gold, so you'll get a more reliable sample from that horizon than if you just do a standard soil sample. A good operator will do about 100 auger samples a day so you can cover big areas quickly, and work out where to drill. Gold is a lot more mobile in the weathering profile than people think, which is why calcrete is a good sample medium.
