Your memory is defective @moondoong, as is mine but I do love to refresh with facts. They had an agreement on which Hawke decided to renege .... the agreement was made '88 at Kirribilli House. it stated that Hawke would be PM and hand over to Keating after 2 terms.
"In June 1991, Treasurer Paul Keating unsuccessfully challenged for the leadership, believing that Hawke had reneged on the Kirribilli Agreement. Keating mounted a second challenge six months later, this time narrowly succeeding.". ........ "After securing a fourth term in March 1990, Hawke reneged on the agreement in January 1991 following a "treacherous" speech by Keating, called the Placido Domingo speech".
it was nothing like the rolling of Rudd by Gillard and Gillard by Rudd, and nothing like the worse backstabbing of Turnbull by Abbott, then Abbott by Turnbull and Turnbull by Morrison (send in the dummy then take over after the popular incumbent if gone strategy ). compared with these the Hawke Keating spills were relatively polite affairs.
