By saying it costs merchants nothing is a misconception towards payments. To facilitate payment, there's a transaction fee, regardless of how small.
Customers are purchasing, and the real free payment method is cash. Everything else has a transaction cost. So merchants are still paying the transaction fee to someone, probably Google, which Zip will then take a cut from it.
Not the most attractive profits, but hey Square didn't start off being the most lucrative investment.
