mrbullman, it is not simply the last copper mile. In the last 4 years with Sol at the helm they have built a private NBN virtually. I live in a rural area. We currently have capability of 8mbs and if Telstra installed an ADSL2 chip we can get 20mbs. There is much intellectural knowledge/property rights and if you like "tricks of the trade" within Telstra. I think it will be far more complex than you suggest. Further, Sol got the job done. It was the job he set about to do and has achieved it. I don't see any achievements on Stephen Conroy's website, just a whole heap of propositions at which to throw dollars at.
Rudd is going overseas next Monday, Conroy has said that Rudd wants to announce the winner of the NBN and he will do it before he goes or when he comes back, but it will be in March. I am feeling it will be when he comes back, as they seem to have their plate pretty full at the moment.
