Force projection is difficult. The Americans are best at it - because they've had lots of practice - but even they have trouble subduing even populations with relatively primitive capabilities/equipment in countries like Afghanistan.

The Chinese definitely have a Defence force strong enough to defend against an incursion into their territory, but that's not the same as being able to invade other countries.

Australia is far away, and the Chinese simply would not be able to get enough soldiers here to occupy the country, and keep them supplied across such a great distance. Protecting those supply lines is a huge logistical problem. I doubt China could invade a country as small and close as Taiwan, let alone Australia. If they could, Taiwan would be invaded already.

If they ever do decide to become expansionist, they'll try on a smaller, closer country than Australia to build their confidence up - if their first invasion is too difficult, they'll fail and lose face big time.

In the mean time, why would they invade? They print their own money and Australia is willing to sell them anything they want.
