Its just a hunch but if conditions worsen saving 20% (or whatever) on staples will seem attractive to a greater % of the population. A certain % of the population seem happy to queue for cheap petrol on Tuesdays and I dont see why the same mentality wont expand to food."
Aldi has been operating for some time. No impact really to the duopoly.
Costco requires an annual fee to be paid. The mentality of buying a membership just to shop wont dent the duopoly. That 20% savings will seem immaterial when having to travel to the remote location, paying the member fee and of course time.
