Applied Brain Research's presentation from the Brain Inspired Computing Congress (BICC) is now on YouTube. It's interesting, worth a watch IMO. In it Chris Eliasmith gives an overview on the history of neuromorphics, mentions leading companies trying to reach commercialisation, plus gives a brief mention of where he thinks the field will go in the future. It gives a good introduction to neuromorphics for new people wanting to learn.
Brainchip gets a brief mention at about the 12 minute mark as a commercial startup, along with GrAI Matter Labs and Intel. No new competitors are listed here.
What's interesting is at the end of the presentation (~29 minutes) Chris says he expects major inroads in the next three years from a major neuromorphic hardware offering. He then goes on to mention three things this hardware will be capable of (be digital, have temporal sparsity and take in dynamic time series data) and lists three of Brainchip's potential competitors (GML, Loihi, Spinnaker 2).
I find this interesting he left Akida out here, for multiple reasons.
1. Akida is capable of all of those three things, and will be in mass production next year. This is much sooner than the three years he mentioned.
2. Chris mentioned Akida earlier in the presentation, so he would know Akida's status. ABR and Brainchip have an arrangement to promote each other, so Chris is guaranteed to know what stage Akida is at.
3. PVDM was also at BICC talking about Akida. Chris would have known this when making his presentation, so wouldn't have wanted to disclose any of what Peter had to say.
4. Brainchip is fairly unknown in the world. There's no benefit for him hyping up another companies product and I think this is the real reason why Akida wasn't mentioned.
To me this presentation was another reinforcement that Brainchip is not only onto a winner but also years ahead of the competition.
Pure speculation, DYOR
