One last thing - an exception, and a possible reason for the positive results MSB has posted.
If a disc has lost all structural integrity to the point that the segment is physically unstable, it will likely cause intense muscle spasm and pain. I'm not sure if it's ever possible to diagnose such instability in CLBP, but clearly it can happen with acute accidental injury. These people end up having a spinal fusion if the segment is way out of alignment and compromising nerve tissue.
