If I buy shares today, they are in my account today. Therefore I am a holder at close of business today. If you day trade and buy a share in the morning those shares are in your account, you the sell in the afternoon for a profit. 2 days later cash settlement takes place the seller gets their money and you get the profits. They were your shares the day you bought and sold them.
