I suspect this is the reason recruitment was always so slow. If the death rate of the participants was close to the other patients in the ICU not in the trial then the doctors would known the cells were not doing much right from the start - if the trial was running anything like the pilot it would have been obvious from the blinded data. This is why you can’t really run a blinded trial when there is a dramatic effect.
MSB had access to the blinded death rates and knew for a long time they weren’t moving the needle. I am curious how many of the shorters also knew - probably quite a lot.
