because everybody was selling everything (including gold) and piling into dollars at that point
possibly a reason for a softer POG over the last couple of days (other than a 'sell-the-fact' situation) are the new lock downs in the UK and worsening brexit dramas, which have pushed up the DXY and made gold (as priced in USD at least) more expensive
