Not 100% sure of this, but I vaguely remember a stock broker telling me many years ago, that a 1 share trade was a way of telling the market that a person (or insto) wanted to buy or sell a shit load of stock at that price. When a broker saw it, he contacted his clients who may be interested accordingly. REMEMBER, I am not saying this to be a fact, but I can vaguely remember this explanation - and it does seem plausible.
