You're being a bit dramatic, Santa. The ASX doesn't consist of just megacaps and unprofitable microcaps. There are plenty of solid, profitable smallcap and midcap companies with good fundamentals you can invest in that aren't banks or miners. Some examples off the top of my head are Ansell, Fisher & Paykel, Washington Soul Pattinson Securities, Link Administration, Dominos' Pizza, Atlas Arteria, Coca-Cola Amatil, Star Entertainment Group, Elders, Bega Cheese, Kogan, Nick Scali and Invocare.
Personally, the $10,000 lesson that Meir and SAS have taught me is that exchange traded funds (ETFs) are the best option for uneducated, unsophisticated investors like us. Check out MVW, VAS or EX20 as some great examples.
