Germans should be proud of their contribution to Aboriginal welfare and anthropology in Australia. I am aware of the good work they also did in the Cameroons in Africa. The Lutherans and Pallotines did wonderful unpaid work with indigenous people. German clergy and German academics were at the forefront of the major early anthropology studies in Australia when little interest was shown by others. Aboriginal life was very hard and often violent before (and after) European contact.
Most left that lifestyle as soon as the opportunity arrived.
In the view of many who have worked with indigenous people over a long time, the government policies since the 1970's have caused more harm than good in education, health, child abuse, crime and fraud in particular - and yes, family destruction. Politically incorrect, but nonetheless true.
Mistakes were made but you would be proud of their work if you come to Australia and seen the mess the well-paid, well-meaning activists have made of Indigenous lives.
