The organized and programmed shorting is a little complex but in summary:My belief is that the practice should be banned because of its rigged nature of market manipulation.
- Financial institutions/traders/shit heads 'rent' a parcel of shares from say a large fund,
- Computerized trading then will dribble small volumes (down to one at a time) of these shares into the market which, especially when news is scarce, has the effect of depressing prices, (check sales volumes for a shorted stock during a day and the number of small parcels is mind boggling)
- A judgement is made to halt and short sold shares (and possibly more) are purchased when 'normal' forces come into play and the price rises.
- A profit is made in this process and the 'rented' shares are returned to the owner.
The large funds don't mind lending their shares because they profit with zero risk.
