Regarding Fixed Interest you should check out a new service someone I know has set up. Look at www.curvesecurities.com.au They have a fair bit of fixed interest experience and I don't think they charge a fee. They get paid a commission by the banks / institutions they place funds into. They deal in term deposits but also deal in corporate bonds even though I think that market is pretty illiquid at the moment.
Let us know how you go with setting up the SMSF as I plan to do it in the future too.
