Having had more thoughts about testing before flying, I think the tests will be done prior to check-in - however it is done.

To ensure only healthy people can receive a boarding pass and to check-in their luggages, reducing the chances of flights being delayed because they found a positive patient at the boarding gate and have to offload their luggage.

It may also be that airlines will have no choice but it is the government or airport that enforces testing - because you can't have someone like Qantas opting for the most accurate/expensive and fastest test, only to have Tiger not opting to test at all and then having tested and untested passengers mixing at the gates.

So IMO, testing will be done outside of the airport and only negative passengers will be able to get inside to check-in. Then it is just a matter of creating different testing stations/areas around the airport with different time slots for different flights. Then testings will most likely be done for incoming international passengers as well.

When millions/billions of dollars are at risk, someone will figure out the most convenient solution.
