Tyro's announcement says it is 'software configuration of terminal platform', it's fix is software upgrade and had to be done by Tyro because the issue impact is 'losing connectivity both ways'.
I don't know about other parts in your post. Tyro explicitly mentioned that 'there is no security issue and no customer/ card data is compromised'. I believe them (there is some dissatisfaction from posters that Tyro is not giving full details but no one accused that they are telling lies until now).
