I don’t think he alighted the train. He is still on the train.
I think he just handed some of his luggage to another passenger he may or may not know, as a part of a longer train journey with more than just one set of tracks and more than one set of locomotives and carriages. It’s a big wide landscape that he is looking at. Not a narrow one way valley.
