My rough understanding is that the Senate has impeached some judges after they left office as a way of keeping then out of public office.

There is precedent. A guilty verdict can be reached without corresponding punishment as it is with any other court determination. A second hearing will determine whether or not Trump is eligible to return to public office.

Any failure to prosecute these matters will make the US appear weak in the eyes of China, Russia, Iran and other dictatorships. Weakness will also encourage the resurrection of National Socialism globally.
