If you think there's not a tech race taking place as we speak, you're not looking hard enough. Oil is estimated above 80 trillion. 80 trillion! Throw that kind of money at whatever sector you want, you'll see progress in under 10 years.

Also, @Mark1955, have a read up on Vanadium Redox Batteries. Interesting sector, energy density is too low to compete with Lithium-ion for a smart phone application, but it's other applications are impressive. And no dendrites
