During drilling, it is the hydrostatic of the mud column with sufficient density, (which gives you a hydrostatic pressure throughout the wellbore) to prohibit any influx of formation fluids (gas, oil or water) as drilling proceeds (plus a trip margin) to counter any swabbing effect when tripping out of the hole at a safe speed.....
