I'll say what I said to the EVN folks here as there is a bit of trading shenanigans going on at the moment across the gold sector. It's just noise, the best solution is to stop looking at it. What drives the SP in a more meaningful timeframe are not these noise, what drives SP is the Revenue and Net Income a company generates over the next few years and the Warchest (which can be glimpsed via the Free Cash Flow).
As for shorts, I kid you not, the long term the impact of a short positions to a company SP is very close to zero. Do the maths, any borrowed share needs to be bought back. More importantly, anyone (entity or individual) shorting a company for more than a year is not feasible. The optimum timeframe to short anything is only 6 weeks. Shorters and those that provide shorting shares (those on margin acounts, without knowing it by the way) pay monthly on interest. i.e a whole cycle on the risk premium needs to happen and when the piper is paid the position is closed because time is not on these traders side!
The situation is even worse for those that short using ETFs, any short position the individual buys there is an actual buy on the share to hedge the risk on the fund and the fund making money on the difference. The net impact being... you guessed it very close to zero.
