It was geothermal power they were looking into with Lihir, considering it is sitting on a geologically active site. Also there was extra motivation with Ross Garnaut involved with Lihir Gold back in the day.
Agree, if we can have cheaper energy, it will help the goldies and any energy intensive industry.
My pet hate is that governments are all too happy to talk 'carbon free' economy and destroy the local economy, while exporting out dirty industries abroad (with even more dubious environmental standards).
Whether or not people agree or disagree about anthropagenic global warming, no one can really argue not to change to hydrogen fuel given the very limited negative externalities.
