Its just institutions and retail locking in profits before the news but by all accounts the news is going to be well to the upside. Short interest in FMG, RIO and BHP is the lowest its been in a year and out of all those mining stocks FMG has the lowest short interest of them all unlike some stock that we both know of .

Sometimes the SP drops by much more than the dividend when it goes ex. I think because the size of dividend is going to be to the upside of consensus and the end of year one better still the SP drop once it goes ex might be less than the amount of the dividend this time around.

I cant see the SP sitting lower than today leading up to the day of the next dividend announcement. Welcome on board and dont knock yourself out in not getting in the absolute bottom of a cycle.
