The Robert Mercer featured in the article is the same Robert Mercer who created Cambridge Analytica and may well have enabled the election of Donald J Trump as POTUS, and the success of the Brexit campaign.
In the 1990's I worked with an IBM speech recognition product for PCs based on the R&D done by Mercer and his colleagues at IBM's Watson Resarch lab. In those days, PC hardware wasn't fast enough to do the signal processing required to analyse and recognise speech, so the product included a separate PC processing card that did most of the signal processing for the voice stream. Even then it couldn't process continuous speech - needed to separate words. These days speech recognition will run on your phone (albeit with the help of massive processing capacity in the cloud). IBM's management decided to discontinue this research and product development, and Mercer left IBM to work on getting mega-rich and other things, at which he mightily succeeded.
