Yes, in their current popular formats most religions stink like hot trash. However, if you read some of the original writings, you can see what the originators had in mind. It's basically about realizing one's true nature which is beyond mental constructs. The maps explaining how the mind works in different modes is very logical, especially some of the Buddhist ones.
On the balance of available evidence, it seems likely the enlightened state does exist. But for how many is it possible? Obviously very few. Some of the popular modern teachers like Eckhart Tolle have millions of followers. Do these followers ever get what they came for? I doubt it. Going to one of his talks would be like going to an Anthony Robbins talk and thinking that he'd give you the key to making riches. If these guys were ranked on their ability to actually help people transform themselves, they'd look very badly. Selling the dream.
