s8, I think you've misread the whole thing. It's got nothing to do with whether he had enough money. He might have been motivated to make more in order to give more, he might have been motivated by the urge to set up his family for the long, long term future. There are all sorts of possible motivations, none of which have anything to do with whether or not Mr. Pratt had enough money for HIS needs.
