I definitely don't think the military cares about the rule of law. They'd probably much prefer to simply round up protest leaders and execute them. They have total control of the military/police/security apparatus. They could stamp out the protests quickly (with much bloodshed), if they wanted to.
I see it as a positive that the army seems determined to take a 'light touch' approach to the protests, probably because they don't want to inflame relations with Washington and Beijing any further.
From MYL's point of view, I think we should all be hoping the protests gradually subside and the military consolidates its power in a 'peaceful' manner, while prioritising continuity and stability for foreign investment.
