But when trying to size up the real profitability of a mine, I would make corrections to the accounts by amortisation where appropriate. In this instance, MLX Rosebery mine is more profitable right now and recently than the accounts would suggest, not amortising these costs. Buffett discovered that railways in the US had some strange accounting practices, and the real underlying profitability(management accounting) was quite a bit higher than was apparent by the published accounts. So he punted heavily on railways, and we all know how well Buffett has done overall.
