That's an interesting concept... a 5 GW nameplate line to carry 7 to 10 GW nameplate capacity of wind and solar. It wouldn't be worth that over-build without local batteries or PHES to store the excess in the middle of day to extend the evening supply.

I'm a huge fan of the idea of DC for the high voltage network. What better way to bring all the disparate generation sources together without everybody having to synchronise and constantly adjust and balance to ensure no frequency rise or droop. Though it would decimate the FCAS market.
