very real fact that the only way Australians will get cheaper electricity is if supply exceeds demand... what company will elect to run at a reduced rate of profit (or loss) in order to cause a drop in price to benefit the consumer????

As it is now... generators wind down as price gets too low to maintain margin - even coal is capable of this to an extent

Cant say I blame AGL for their current "no major action" approach... coal plants have years of production left... plenty of time to generate revenue... why build new scale now - only to see the returns from your existing plant reduce as a result?

Either companies get access to cheaper sources of energy (and retail price gets lowered while maintaining same price margin)... or some form of intervention (such as government policy mandating minimum energy supply levels or or direct investment)

Australia is a big country we have big costs involved in purely moving the energy along wires... so different to many other places around the world... plenty of opportunities here - but AGL need to be shown to be taking action - before someone else does (government or private) IMO.
