Tax planning is definitely why Dr T did it, because:
(a) that's what he announced via the ASX
and
(b) apart from tax, holding a share and a deep in-the-money option on that share have almost identical benefit from future SP increases. In option jargon, a deep in-the-money option has delta of almost 1.0
Dr T could have also pointed out that the options were lapsing in 5 months, but that information was publicly known already..
