unsure about the rest of australia, but in WA woolworths liquor no longer exists. all woolworths liquor stores were converted to BWS a few years ago. woolies liquor was on the slide due to the ingress of dan murphies and first choice (coles group big box liquor). due to the locations of these stores and the hard pressure they placed on prices, woolies liquor and coles group liquorland lost the edge that was keeping customers in the door, which was convenience at the cost of a few $ per spend. customers were happy to pick up a carton of beer with the weekly shop for an extra $2, but when the price difference became say $5/$10, and the cheaper alternative was 2 minutes around the corner, customers voted with their wallet. BWS had stable sales due in part to location of stores, a number of their stores were stand alone, and not dictated by shopping hours.
the same happened to hotel bottle shops and independents, they cant compete on price due to volume. they simply dont have the storage room or turn over to push through enough product to survive on the discounted price style of selling.
also to be factored in with the recent success of dan murphys, this can also in part be attributed to the growth of store locations. 10 years ago they had a handful of locations, now they are every where. of interest compare the locations of Dan Murphy stores to First choice stores - i know of 2 first choice liquor stores relatively close to me, yet i know of 5 dan murphys stores in the same radius.
i dont think B2B will rip 10% of trade from Dan Murphys. the pubs, clubs, restaurants, etc didnt buy their stock from Dan's to start with, so you cant lose the sales you didnt have.
