My God! Where would we be without clear punctuation!? How would we dismantle and discern the full and correct meanings of pieces of semantic laden text, such as AKP's announcements? Or gauge the breadth of innuendo in any financial disclosure statement and directors reports. (or should that be director's reports, or maybe directors' reports?)

My wife spent a number of years teaching English idiom to non-native English speakers. In spoken Japanese I gathered that there is supposed to be minimal stress placed on what is spoken. All words should all have similar emphasis. Stress is like shouting. In response she used to explain the different potential and intended connotations and shades of meaning English speakers would likely take from the following sentence if the speaker placed stress on a different word when saying it.

"I did not steal your yellow jacket."

And this grows substantially when different kinds of stress are used. There are so many more meanings implied or pointed to than there are words in the sentence. Native speakers of English generally will understand them without even thinking about it or knowing there is such a thing. Native speakers of any language will likely have the same kinds of secondary level signalling going on in their own languages. Japanese students who use minimal stress in their own speaking were generally floored by the implications, and many had their eyes opened to the various misunderstandings they had already encountered in past conversations.

Anyone who has had anything to do with a genuine cockney speaker of rhyming slang will understand what I mean. You hear the words, but have no idea what has been said.

I confess to often being amused and occasionally bewildered by the "private languages" used by the different age demographics here on HC. Everything from technobabble TLA's (three letter acronyms) to txt spch to homey rap and other in-group mumblings are used by people who are no doubt confident that everybody will understand the nuances of what they are, presumably, hoping to get across to others. Language is often a means of status posturing, selective disinformation, and even coded assault between groups. We all need to watch our p's and q's - as well as those of others, if we want to understand what is actually being transmitted.
