Given the share price has been dropping:
I would have actually preferred it if the short position was increasing rapidly (as this would mean additional shares have to be bought back some time in the future).
Instead share price has been dropping together with short positions decreasing. This means there has been natural selling from holders (as opposed to shorters short selling what they don't own), and in the future there are less 'short shares' that will have to be bought back.
