week that the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for itsoperations at Mining Martap Bauxite Project, which will bring it one stepcloser to beginning production at the site.
Canyon submitted an application to mine the site to the CameroonMinistry of Environment, Nature Protection and Sustainable Development(MINEPDED) almost one year ago. The plan at the site is to divide it into threeexploration tenements and connect them to the port of Douala via new haul roadsto a rail line at Makor.
The firm says a combination of environmental factors and effects of thenovel coronavirus pandemic require them to complete the ESIA in phases. Canyonsays it plans to do more of its own studies on issues that may be raised in theESIA.
James Durrant, Director of Projects, said in a press release that local stakeholdershave been immensely helpful in completing the ESIA.

Throughout the ESIA process, engagement with local communities has beenpositive and the ESIA has provided a clear understanding of the biophysicalbackground to the Project, providing Canyon with the means to proactivelymitigate and control impacts and make our project of even greater benefit tothe communities.”
The Minim-Martap Bauxite Project sits atop an estimated 1,002 millionmetric tons of bauxite ore, of which 484 thousand metric tons is thought to behigh-grade bauxite. Canyon says the first phase of production at the site willstart at a rate of 5 million metric tons per annum after an investment at thesite of US$120 million.
