"we appear to be going totally against the grain of our nature and characteristics.....". ....... by the nature and characteristics I think you mean traditional values and beliefs that are inherited from our parentage and culture.

120 years ago women finally got the right to vote. I don't think there is a person alive today who would think that women should not have this right. yet 120 years ago the debate had serious moral arguments against womens' rights.

Over the intervening century our nature and characteristics have changed enormously and so we also want first Australians to have significant improvements in legally supported rights, many want nature to be preserved and protected from industrial utility, some even want koalas to have rights.

Our modern nature and characteristics are always changing and developing to be better than they were.
