It reminds me of the fund manager I heard who gave the following reason why individuals should let an "expert" like him manage their investments rather than do it themselves:
"If you put $1000 into shares and they rise 50% they are then worth $1500. But if those shares then fall 50% they are only worth $750. Similarly if you put $1000 into shares and they fell 50% they are then worth $500. But if those shares then rise 50% they are only worth $750. In both cases with 50% moves either way you have lost money. You can see how the odds are stacked against you. It's not easy for the individual investor. That's why you need a professional like me to manage your money. "
